7,478 nabbed for drunk driving in city this year
New Delhi: Delhi Traffic Police has nabbed 7,478 people for drunk driving this year and impounded 634 vehicles. Data from Jan 1 to date shows that 6,844 of these drivers have been prosecuted, according to officers.
At 4,906 cases, two-wheelers account for the largest share of such violations, followed by cars (908). The rest of the cases involve other categories of vehicles.
In contrast, 7,717 cases of drunk driving were reported in the first three months of 2025 — 2,484 in Jan, 1,776 in Feb and 3,457 in March.
Back to this year. In a single drive conducted between 9 pm and midnight on April 18, traffic police booked 269 people for driving under the influence of liquor. The three-hour operation, carried out simultaneously across all traffic ranges in the city, also led to the impounding of 38 vehicles.
The drive targeted a wide range of vehicles, including two-wheelers, cars, heavy transport vehicles, light goods vehicles and autorickshaws. The checks were part of an ongoing campaign aimed at curbing drunk driving, a key contributor to road accidents in the city.
Traffic officers said such sustained enforcement drives are designed not only to penalise offenders, but also to act as a deterrent. “There is zero tolerance towards drunk driving,” a senior officer said, adding that similar late-night checks will continue across Delhi in the coming weeks.
Joint commissioner of police (traffic) Sanjay Tyagi said strict action will be taken against violators as part of efforts to improve road safety and reduce accidents linked to impaired driving.
“We urge people to avoid driving after consuming alcohol and instead opt for safer alternatives, such as using designated drivers or the public transport,” a senior police officer said.
