new delhi: a special court has convicted three persons for killing an unborn baby five years ago. the seven-month-old baby died after the three convicts - raj dahiya, sanjay singh and anindo ghosh - stabbed its mother during a robbery in 1997. according to the cbi, dahiya, singh and ghosh had gone to the nanakpura residence of then deputy commissioner, income tax, amitabh shukla on january 21, 1997 to commit robbery.
the three had gone there at the instance of fourth accused, shailesh kumar, who had allegedly planned the robbery. shailesh was reportedly a close friend of the shuklas. in the course of the robbery, however, they were intercepted by shukla's pregnant wife mamta and domestic help vijay kumar. dahiya, singh and ghosh had stabbed the pregnant mamta repeatedly, killing her unborn child. they had also murdered vijay. "all the four accused belonged to well-placed families but their desire to earn quick money led them to plan the robbery," the cbi had said. special judge m l sahni also directed dahiya to pay a fine of rs 1 lakh which will be handed over to vijay's family. the fine of rs 50,000, imposed on singh, will be given to the shuklas. ghosh has been asked to pay a fine of rs 10,000 which will be submitted to the state. the court, however, released shailesh kumar after the cbi failed prove that he had conspired in the murder.
