26-yr-old hangs self just 2 weeks after marriage

NEW DELHI: A 26-year-old woman hanged herself from a ceiling fan inside her house on Tuesday afternoon in Sabzi Mandi, north Delhi. Family of Kiran, who married just two weeks ago, alleged that she killed herself due to harassment from her in-laws over dowry. The police have registered a case of dowry death at Subzi Mandi police station and arrested the husband of the deceased.
"On Tuesday afternoon, Vikas Kumar called his wife but she did not answer the phone.When he came to the house, he found it locked from inside. He broke open the window of their fourth floor room and found Kiran's body,'' said a police officer. No suicide note was recovered from the spot, said the officer. Cops said Kiran and Vikash, who works as a salesman in a Chandni Chowk shop, got married on November 10.
Alleging that harassment for dowry forced his sister to commit suicide, Manish Kumar (23) said: "This Sunday when she came to our home in Paharganj, she complained that her brother-in-law had been taunting her for not being able to get a four-wheeler as part of dowry. She even told my mother that she did not want to return.''
Added Kiran's mother, Maya Devi: "We spent lakhs on her marriage. From a motorbike to refrigerator, we gave her in-laws everything that we could afford. Even the heena in her hand had not faded when I saw her on Sunday. She did not look very happy but I never thought that anything like this would happen.''
Mother-in-law of the deceased, Sarla Sharma (55), who has also been detained by the police, however denied the allegations. "She was a daughter to me as much as she was to her mother. Kiran committed suicide when no one was at home. I don't know why we are being blamed for her death. We did not even demand any dowry during marriage,'' she said.
The police said they are investigating the matter. "Cases of dowry death within two weeks of marriage are very rare. However due to allegations, we are exploring all the angles,'' said a senior police officer.
