NEW DELHI: Delhi High Court was informed on Monday by the social welfare department that 102 separate toilets for transgender people had been built in the city and 194 more were under construction.

The department said further action would be taken expeditiously in the matter.

Stating that it will dispose of the petition by passing appropriate orders, the division bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Sanjeev Narula observed that substantial progress had been made by Delhi authorities in the matter.

The court was hearing a PIL filed by Jasmine Kaur Chhabra, seeking separate toilets for transgender people. The petitioner stated that lack of separate toilets made transgender people prone to sexual assault and harassment. It also said every human being, irrespective of gender, had basic human rights.
