DEHRADUN: A number of youngsters in the city are trying out multiple options in the pursuit of a healthier lifestyle. These include taking the

help of apps

which aid in making

better drink choices

to switching over to natural alternatives like

juices and milkshakes

rather than

fizzy drinks

which are high in sugar content. A popular download is the 'Healthy Drinks' app which tracks the vitamin content in each drink and provides information related to drink choices like juices, smoothies, milkshakes etc. Yasmin Singh, a student who regularly uses these apps says " it is a great way to monitor what you are drinking and make healthy choices."

Speaking about the trend, psychologist Gurleen Bindra told TOI, “It is heartening to see an increased awareness on the part of youngsters to let go of a sedentary lifestyle and choose healthier options. I often tell my students to avoid carbonated cold-drinks as the direct intake of sugar through these drinks lead to a sudden burst of energy and momentary hyperactive behaviour. They should rather drink something healthier like fruit juices or milk-shakes which even though have sugar in them are a better option.”

A number of outlets have also sprung up around the city offering healthier drinking options. The latest entrant is the Delhi-based Keventer's chain which opened two of its milkshake parlours on Rajpur Road last week. Doon-based Tashi and Nungshi Malik, the world’s first twins to scale Mt Everest who inaugurated the outlets said that "the avaulability of healthy drinking options like milkshakes was a good trend and it was heartening to see many youngsters choosing such options willingly”.

Anya Dhiman, a 21-year-old while gulping down her favourite shake told TOI, “While I was younger, I used to crave for cold drinks which are sweetened and are quite harmful for teeth and health in general, which is why since I have grown up, I prefer having healthier options like juices or fruit shakes. It is a good thing that milkshakes are now available in the Doon valley like metro cities. I also like the juices available near the Dispensary Road or even at the make-shift vendors near Gandhi park which sell the most delicious pineapple and orange juices. It feels good to drink something which apart from being tasty is healthy as well unlike the fizzy drinks".
