Mussoorie: The Queen of the Hills witnessed severe traffic congestion over the extended weekend due to a surge in tourist vehicles and an acute shortage of parking space. Vehicles parked along roads caused bottlenecks across on stretches, including Kincraig–Gandhi Chowk, Big Bend–Picture Palace, and areas around Gandhi Chowk, Zero Point, Landour and Mullingar, compounding the problem.
“I was stuck for almost an hour near Gandhi Chowk on Saturday. The situation was bad,” said Vishwanath, a tourist from New Delhi.
Residents said shortage of parking space forces visitors to leave vehicles on roads. “Vehicles are parked from the Gandhi Chowk bus stand for nearly a kilometre. A similar situation exists at the Picture Palace bus stand,” said a resident.
A shuttle service started in Sept 2024 from Kincraig parking to the town has not become operational. “To my knowledge, the shuttle service is not running,” said senior sub-inspector Satinder Bhati.
“Considering the traffic jams, this was a welcome move, but it has failed due to lack of monitoring,” a resident said.
No new parking space has been created since 2022, while the number of hotels and houses has increased, worsening the shortage.
