Uttarakhand Tunnel Crash News Live Updates: Rescue teams start horizontal drilling from entrance of Uttarakhand tunnel
The rescue team has started horizontal drilling from entrance of the collapsed tunnel in Uttarakhand. For the first time in the last 10 days, visuals of the workers trapped inside the collapsed tunnel in Uttarakhand's Silkyara surfaced on Tuesday morning. In a significant development, the rescue teams managed to successfully create an additional supply line on Monday by inserting a six-inch diameter pipe through the debris to the other side. After over 9 days, the workers were able to have their first hot meal of khichdi, which was sent to them packed in bottles. They were also sent packets of dry fruit and some fresh oranges. Meanwhile, the Uttarakhand High Court, comprising Acting Chief Justice Manoj Tiwari and Justice Pankaj Purohit, on Monday ordered the Centre and the state government to reply within 48 hours regarding the measures taken to rescue the 41 workers stranded in the Silkyara tunnel. Uttarkashi tunnel rescue | The 6-inch food pipeline laid yesterday at the Silkyara Tunnel in Uttarkashi has become fully functional. About 5-10 kgs each of different fruits like apples, oranges, sweet lime etc and 5 dozen bananas was successfully delivered inside. In addition, packets of medicine, salt and electrol have also been sent. Preparations are now to send cooked food like Khichdi, roti-sabzi etc.

Safer to do horizontal drilling to rescue labourers trapped in Silkyara tunnel: Experts
It will be safer to do horizontal drilling to rescue the 41 labourers trapped inside the Silkyara tunnel in Uttarkashi, a former GSI official said on Tuesday. Tribhuwan Singh Pangti, who retired as the additional director general of the Geological Survey of India (GSI) told PTI that the disaster could have been averted had the construction company prepared a pilot tunnel first to study the rock mass of the area and installed a proper support system.

Additional Secretary Technical, Road and Transport Mahmood Ahmed says: "First, the NHIDCL has ensured the facility of oxygen supply, food, water or medicine. There are lights and an electricity supply inside...There is a place up to 2km inside as the tunnel was already built... From the 4-inch pipeline, we were sending dry fruits and other eatables... Through the 6-inch pipeline, we sent a walkie-talkie inside and established communication... We also got a video showing that all of them are in good mental and physical health..."

RSP pipes airlifted to Uttarakhand for tunnel rescue operation
As the nation anxiously awaits the safe evacuation of 41 workers trapped inside Silkyara tunnel in Uttarakhand, special grade pipes manufactured by Rourkela Steel Plant were airlifted from here to augment the rescue operation, an official said. Tuesday was the second day that the special grade pipes were airlifted for use at the tunnel collapse site at Uttarkashi, the official said.

Member of the National Disaster Management Authority, Lt General Syed Ata Hasnain says: "Two teams of NDRF are doing rehearsals at the site to deal with any contingency and any situation. If in any case, they have to crawl and enter the tunnel or provide help to technical experts or to bring out the workers trapped in the tunnel..."

Member of the National Disaster Management Authority, Lt General Syed Ata Hasnain says: "There is sufficient water, oxygen power and light inside the tunnel. A few families of the trapped workers have been transported there. Contact with the state administrations from where the workers belong has been going on. Some of the families of workers have been able to talk to the trapped workers through the 4-inch pipe that has been installed...Our focussed effort is on horizontal drilling through the auger machine which has been brought from outside..."

One of the trapped workers, Jaidev, while speaking to the supervisor at the tunnel collapse site, said in Bangla, "Please record, I will tell something to my maa. Maa, tension koroni aami thik achi. Time a kheye nebe. Babakeo time a kheye nite bolbe (Mother, do not worry about me, I am fine. Please you and father eat your meals on time)."

When a tunnel rescue takes place, it is a very challenging effort. 3-4 international experts have also come to the site. The government has made sure that wherever we have knowledge of experts, those experts have flown in and are available for advice...There is ample space inside where the workers are trapped. Survival rations, medicine and other essentials are being pushed through a compressor into the space where these workers are..."

Under plan 4 of strengthening of tunnel & construction of escape route by NHIDCL, 3rd attempt for another lifeline service was made by way of pushing a 150mm dia steel pipe through the debris by ROC machine. Pipe has been successfully inserted in the entire length of around 57 m. Some fruits items were also supplied. Video connection was established with the stranded workforce. Some debris was found inside the pipe and cleaning of the pipe using compressed air & water pressure done at night. Further leaning is has been completed using compressed air. Fabrication of Protection canopy for the pipe drilling machine has started. Modification of 900 mm auger to 800 mm dia using gas cutter started. Welding of 800mm pipe has started, 2nd pipe inserted (2 pipes of 6m length each inserted).

Uttarakhand tunnel collapse: New pipeline makes communication with trapped workers easier
Tuesday morning brought some relief for family members of the 41 workers trapped inside the Silkyara tunnel for nine days here as the newly inserted six-inch pipeline made communicating with them easier. The family members said they could hear the workers clearly through the new pipeline, which will also be used for sending larger quantities inside the tunnel. An alternative 6-inch pipeline was pushed in through the rubble of the collapsed tunnel on Monday.

Be sensitive in reportage, avoid sensationalising tunnel rescue operations: Govt to TV channels
The government on Tuesday issued an advisory to private television channels, asking them to refrain from sensationalising the coverage of the rescue operations at Silkyara in Uttarakhand, where 41 workers are trapped inside a tunnel for 10 days. The advisory, issued by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, also told private television channels to be sensitive in their reportage, especially while putting out headlines and videos of the rescue operations, considering the psychological status of family members of the trapped workers.

Brief setback to rescue operations as narrow road prevents piling machine movement
Efforts to rescue trapped 41 workers in the ongoing Silkyara tunnel collapse received a brief setback when the piling machine being transported for the rescue operation got stuck due to the narrow road leading to the spot.
The traffic has come to a halt on both sides of the main road.
"Due to the narrowness of the road leading to the tunnel and landslides occurring at various places on the way, the machine going to participate in the rescue operation got stuck, and traffic came to a standstill on both sides," the truck driver carrying the piling machine stated.
At present, efforts are being made to widen the road so that the machines can be mobilised on the spot.

Morning meal prepared for trapped workers
A morning meal was prepared for the workers who have been trapped in a tunnel in Silkyara, Uttarkashi for 10 days. Teams of cooks are involved in the preparation of the breakfast for the trapped workers. One of the cooks said that 'Aloo-Chana Dal' has been prepared, and 'Khichdi' and 'Daliya' are also among the options that will be sent as per the instructions given to them. He also said that they will also be making 'Puri' later on.
