NEW DELHI: Heavy overnight rains wreaked havoc across Uttarakhand on Tuesday, triggering flash floods, house collapses and road damage. A shocking video surfaced showing several labourers being swept away by the raging Tons river.
The footage also showed a tractor stranded in the middle of the surging river, with labourers onboard pleading for help, while locals on the riverbank tried to figure out ways to rescue them.
The downpour washed away a bridge and left many stranded, with reports of missing persons and one confirmed death in Mussoorie, officials said.
“Damage has been reported from Sahastradhara and Mal Devta in Dehradun, and also from Mussoorie. Two to three people are said to be missing in Dehradun. A death has been reported from Mussoorie and is being verified,” Disaster Management Secretary Vinod Kumar Suman said. He added that rescue teams have moved 300–400 people to safety.
Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed concern in a post on X, saying: “Received the sad news of some shops getting damaged due to heavy rains in Sasthdhara, Dehradun, late last night. District administration, SDRF, and police have reached the spot and are engaged in relief and rescue operations. I am personally monitoring the situation and pray for everyone’s safety.”
Meanwhile, the Song river swelled, flooding nearby areas. “The water level is rising, and the flow is very strong right now. No deaths have been reported so far. Tourists were staying in the hotels,” said Hari Giri, Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Sadar.
Waterlogging was also reported in Dehradun’s IT Park area, where floodwaters entered offices and basements. “I have been stranded here since 5.30am. The car has been stuck since last night and is submerged. Water has entered offices and basements,” said Hrithik Sharma, a local.
Relief and rescue operations are continuing across affected areas.
