Bill on OBC reservation moved to select committee

Dehradun: The Uttarakhand state assembly moved The Uttarakhand (Uttar Pradesh Municipal Corporation Act, 1959) (Amendment) Bill, 2024 to the select committee on Friday, following concerns raised by BJP MLAs about the “rapid survey” conducted for OBC reservations in municipal bodies.After the House approved The Uttarakhand (Uttar Pradesh Municipality Act, 1916) (Amendment) Bill, 2024, the govt sought approval for the related Municipal Corporation Act amendment. However, BJP MLAs, including Munna Singh Chauhan and Vinod Chamoli, expressed concerns and requested that the matter be reviewed by the select committee.The committee has been directed submit its report within a month. Later, BJP MLA from Dharampur Vinod Chamoli told TOI, “It is important to ensure that only Uttarakhand residents benefit through the reservation and it does not bring people of other states under its ambit.” He pointed out that people from other states are moving to the state at a fast pace, especially in the last few years.
