DEHRADUN: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is inching closer towards forming a government in Uttarakhand twice in succession -- a first in the state's history.

Uttarakhand assembly elections 2022 results live updates

In the initial rounds of counting, the saffron party has taken a lead on 44 out of 70 assembly seats, which is well over the majority mark of 36.

On the other hand, BJP's prime challenger, Congress, has maintained its lead on 22 seats.

Apart from BJP and Congress, the Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party is performing well on two seats.

Besides, in two constituencies, independent candidates have taken the lead.

The two primary contenders for the chief minister post -- incumbent chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and former Congress CM Harish Rawat -- are trailing in their respective constituencies. In Khatima, Congress's Bhuwan Chand Kapri is ahead of Dhami, though by a slender margin of 16 votes.

Meanwhile, in Lalkuan (Nainital), Harish Rawat is trailing by 9,966 votes. Interestingly, Congress candidate from Ramnagar (also in Nainital), Mahendra Pal Singh, is leading by 1,361 votes. Rawat's daughter, Anupama, is also leading by a margin of 3,470 votes against state minister Swami Yatishwaranand in Haridwar (rural).

In Lansdowne, former state minister Harak Singh Rawat's daughter-in-law and former Miss India contestant, Anukriti Gusain is trailing by a margin of 4,125 votes. Health minister Dham Singh Rawat is another big leader who seems to be having a difficult time. He is trailing by 1,093 votes from Srinagar, where he is pitted against Congress state chief Ganesh Godiyal. Cabinet minister Subodh Uniyal is trailing by 1,476 votes from Narendra Nagar, where he is facing Congress's Om Gopal.

In contrast, women and child development minister Rekha Arya and tourism minister Satpal Maharaj are holding their ground.

While Arya is leading with 2,490 votes in Someshar, Maharaj is ahead of his Congress counterpart by 1,561 votes in Chaubattakhal.
