Uttarakhand bus accident: Toll rises to 36; here's what we know so far
NEW DELHI: At least 36 people have died after a bus carrying 35 to 40 passengers fell into a deep gorge near Marchula in Uttarakhand's Almora district on Monday morning.

- The accident occurred in Marchula when the bus was en route to Kumaun from Garhwal region.
- The bus reportedly lost control around 7 am near Sarad Bend and plunged into a gorge along the Geet Jagir riverbank.
- The bus is owned by Garhwal Motor Owners Union Ltd (GMOU).
- Officials have confirmed 36 fatalities, but the death toll may rise as there were around 35 to 40 passengers on board.
- According to initial reports from survivors, when the 42-seater bus fell, passengers were ejected due to the impact, while others managed to escape on their own.
- Police and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel have launched a massive search and rescue operation.
- Many injured passengers have been taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
- Uttarakhand chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has expressed his condolences for the lives lost in the accident.
- The Chief Minister's office confirmed that a team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has also joined the search and rescue operation.
- Authorities are investigating whether the accident was caused by a mechanical failure or other factors.
