DEHRADUN: Among a host of relief measures for victims of land subsidence in Joshimath, the Uttarakhand cabinet on Friday announced that two adult members of each displaced family would get financial relief in accordance with MNREGS provisions and there will be a one-year moratorium on EMIs for residents who have taken loans from state cooperative banks.

The cabinet further said in a week's time, it will move a request to the Centre for an interim relief fund and that the state is "making a request to waive EMIs for those who have taken loans from nationalised banks too".

Organisations that are studying the causes that might have led to the current situation at Joshimath include the National Disaster Management Authority, National Institute of Disaster Management, Geological Survey of India, Indian Institute of Technology-Roorkee, Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, National Institute of Hydrology, and Central Building Research Institute.

Also, to avoid a repeat of a Joshimath-like incident, the cabinet has approved a proposal to undertake a carrying capacity study in towns in the hill areas of Uttarakhand. Regarding the interim relief amount, details of the package would be prepared by experts and a letter in this regard would be sent to the Centre in a week's time.
