Pithoragarh: The Uttarakhand Kranti Dal (UKD), has decided to oppose the jan sunwae (public hearing) of the proposed Pancheshwar Dam, to be held on August 9, 11 and 17 in Champawat, Pithoragarh and Almora respectively.

In a press conference here, UKD chief Kashi Singh Aery said that his party will oppose the construction of the dam as the government is cheating the public on the name of public hearing. He said that they are not fulfilling the procedure of public hearing establish by the Centre in 2006.

Meanwhile, around 33 village councils in Jhulaghat area sent a memorandum to the district magistrate demanding suspension of the public hearing. Villagers of Barakot area in Champawat district have demanded that their settlements should have access to good roads, schools and job for one family member.

Protests have also started picking pace on the social media.
