ROORKEE: A 19-year-old boy was arrested on Monday for killing his father in Hast Mauli village under Khanpur police station, after being repeatedly scolded for his excessive use of social media and online gaming.
Police said Suraj allegedly killed his father, Malakhraj Singh, late Saturday night. The two often argued over Suraj's addiction to social media and online video games. An eighth-grade dropout, Suraj was frustrated by constant reprimands from his unemployed father, who was also a habitual drinker.
On Saturday, after another argument, Suraj allegedly decided to kill him. That night, while the family slept, he shot his father in the chest with a country-made pistol. Around 4:30 am on Sunday, Suraj called the police claiming unknown assailants shot his father. A murder case was filed based on a complaint.
During the investigation, inconsistencies in Suraj's statement led police to suspect him. They later discovered he had illegally purchased the weapon used in the killing and had thrown it into a sugarcane field. The firearm was recovered.
"Inspector Ravinder Shah and his team did an excellent job in cracking this case, especially given that there were no CCTV cameras or surveillance support at the scene. The entire case was solved through manual investigation," said SSP Pramendra Singh Dobal.
