Sanksrit key to India’s ‘world image’: Guv

HARIDWAR: The tenth convocation of Uttarakhand Sanskrit University (USU) in Haridwar took place on Saturday, where Lt Gen Gurmit Singh (retd), state governor and the university's chancellor emphasised the significance of Sanskrit as a language not only of the past but also of the future.

Singh said, "Sanskrit is a treasure trove of knowledge in various domains, and India's progress and its emergence as a 'vishwaguru' largely depend on this language."

During the convocation, Acharya Balkrishna, the general secretary of Patanjali Yogpeeth, was honoured with the Vidya Vachaspati (D Litt) degree by the university.

The degree was also conferred on Padmashri Poonam Suri, an educationist, a Vedic scholar and Arya Samaj leader. More than two thousand students received their PhD, postgraduate, and undergraduate degrees.
