Dehradun: A man who was caught allegedly smuggling a leopard skin earlier this year took poison after he received summons from the court to appear for a hearing in the case.

Police said that the accused identified as Kishan Singh, a resident of Dhumakot in Pauri Garhwal, took the step because he was afraid of punishment.

Singh and his son, Sunil, were summoned by Ramnagar court for a hearing on March 8. Both were arrested by Ramnagar police in January this year while smuggling a leopard skin and were on bail.

“While Sunil reached for the hearing, his father was found dead near Ghodpalla village in Pauri,” said Jodh Singh Joshi, circle officer (CO), Kotdwar.

Kishan’s body was spotted on March 9 by shepherds on the Pauri-Ramnagar border. A police team took him to a community health centre (CHC) nearby where doctors declared him dead.
