ROORKEE: Outraged that his son's "murderer" was roaming free after securing bail, a 60-year-old man from Jhabiran village in Roorkee allegedly hired a contract killer to exact revenge, said police.
The case dates back to June 28 last year when 27-year-old Kapil Saini was found dead in an orchard with bullet wounds. During the investigation, police found that Kapil was last seen with his close friend, 26-year-old Ankit Chaudhary. Their friendship had soured over a dispute, after which Chaudhary allegedly killed Kapil.
Chaudhary was jailed but granted bail in Nov. Since then, he had been moving freely in the village, fuelling a "thirst for revenge" in Kapil's father, Sanjay Saini, police said. Sanjay then hired gangster Vikas Vicky from neighboring Kurdi village to kill Chaudhary, they added.
Vicky enlisted three others—Dipanshu, Aman, and Rohit—for the job. Sanjay promised to pay them Rs 4 lakh but initially gave only Rs 4,000 as an advance.
"On the night of Feb 19, Vicky and the other accused made Ankit drink heavily. Once he lost consciousness, they stabbed him to death and later dumped his body in the garbage pit of a cremation ground in the village," said SSP Pramendra Dobal. Ankit's body was found the next day.
Police have arrested Sanjay, Vicky, and Dipanshu, while Rohit and Aman are on the run. "Teams have been deployed to track them down," Dobal added.
