Legacy waste removed from Uttarakhand's Rudrapur trenching ground
The final phase, from Dec 2023 to Aug 2024, saw removal of an additional 53,000 tonnes at a cost of Rs 2.5 crore, with Rs 465 paid per tonne. In total, approximately Rs 8 crore was spent to remove legacy waste.
DM Uday Raj Singh asked for the area to be developed as a green space. The administration plans to plant golden bamboo and Ashoka trees. The river-adjacent area will also be landscaped with greenery.
“The waste removal was a long-standing demand of residents, and we are committed to developing this area as a green space. We will seek govt approval to use cleared land for commercial purposes,” said Naresh Durgapal, municipal commissioner of Rudrapur.
Residents of nearby Bhoot Bangla and Dudhia Nagar areas expressed relief and gratitude. “We lived in constant fear of diseases due to the pile of garbage. The smell was unbearable. Now, we can breathe easier,” said Ramesh Chandra, a resident. “We are thankful to the DM for completing this initiative,” Sunita Devi, another resident, said.

In Sector 57, Gurgaon, irregular garbage collection for the past two weeks caused sanitation issues. Residents complained to MCG without success.
