HARIDWAR: "India's rise is for the welfare of the whole world," said RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Monday, adding, "We believe in 'vasudhaiva kutumbakam' -- seeing the world as one family. Those who look at people as their own and as others, are narrow-minded. To the generous, entire world is a family."

Calling for 'globalisation of compassion', Bhagwat said, "This is the mantra for world peace and prosperity." The RSS sarsanghchalak was delivering the second special lecture at Haridwar-based Dev Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya on the G-20 theme of 'vasudhaiva kutumbakam.' According to Bhagwat, ancient sages did not only propound principles for a harmonious and peaceful life, but also devised systems to put these into practice. Unfortunately, these got lost during several centuries of slavery India suffered, he said. "But the country is rising once again, and it is rising not only for itself, but for the whole world," he added. "Our 'rishis' had risen to a level of knowledge from where they saw various communities of people striving towards the same goal."

"Different religions for them were nothing but different ways leading to the same God: 'Ekam sat viprah bahudha vadanti' (God is one, only he is spoken of differently by the scholars). Indian concept of family included not only human beings, but all other beings and environment," he said.
