Half-burnt body of 20-year-old woman found in Meerut, cops suspect rape, murder

MEERUT: Partially charred body of a woman, believed to be a 20-year-old, was found next to the tubewell of a farmer's field in Meerut’s Jisori village on Friday morning. The body was sent for autopsy after villagers intimated police of the incident.
Police suspect that the woman was strangulated to death before being burnt as a rope was found tied around her neck.However, the woman's identity couldn't be ascertained till the time of filing this report.
Meanwhile, police were told by a few villagers that they saw flames from a distance. Divulging more details, Keshav Kumar, SP (rural), told TOI, “As the village is situated is in proximity to Hapur, we are coordinating with police there to find out if any missing cases were filed recently.” The officer added that an FIR will be lodged in the case after the postmortem report comes in.
