DEHRADUN: Food joints and eateries in the city, especially those at scenic areas on the outskirts, like Old Mussoorie Road or near Maldevta, are allowing consumption of alcohol on their premises despite not having a liquor licence, local residents have claimed. The residents alleged that the violations are taking place despite authorities being completely aware of the issue.

“Food shop owners are doing this in collusion with police and other local agencies. It can’t happen without their nod and no one is doing anything about it,” said Ashutosh Singh, a Jakhan resident. The residents further alleged that it is a common sight in the evenings and on weekends for youngsters to be consuming alcohol and even indulging in narcotics at eateries. “This also happens around food trucks in the city. The concept of BYOB (bring your own booze) has become common. Some of them don’t disturb anyone, but others often cause public nuisance and engage in disruptive behaviour,” said Meenakshi Goel, a senior citizen.

A server at a momo stall near Maldevta acknowledged, “Only the people we know well can come in with any prohibited items. They usually stay in the corner, don’t bother anyone and give us good business.”

Responding to queries, an official in the district excise department said, “Violations of such kind have been brought to our attention and police are taking the necessary steps. We are also looking at overcharging at liquor shops or any consumption around them. Penalties of nearly Rs 3 lakh have been imposed in the past two weeks itself.”
