MUSSOORIE:
Congress on Sunday decided to give veteran leaders a miss and fielded a debutant for the Mussoorie municipal council president’s post.
Denying a ticket to former president
Manmohan Singh Mall, the party has given the candidature to the much-younger Megh Singh Kandari. The soft-spoken Kandari is a one-time president of Students Union at the Municipal Degree College.
Sources said that Mall may now contest independently.
Speaking to TOI, Mall said, “I will be in a better position to talk about my plans tomorrow.” Incidentally, in last year’s assembly polls, too, Mall in defiance of the party had gone ahead with his campaigning in Dhanaulti even though Congress had decided to support an independent candidate for the seat.
Meanwhile, BJP has fielded one-time council president O P Uniyal. He told TOI, “I am honoured that the party has considered me. I would focus on issues such as vendor zones, employment, health care facilities, beautification of the mall and removing encroachments.
