DEHRADUN: The term of Uttarakhand chief secretary, Radha Raturi, has been extended for six months till Sept 30 by the Union govt. Raturi, the first woman chief secretary of the Himalayan state, took charge of the position on Feb 1 and was scheduled to retire on March 31.
Confirmation of the extension was conveyed through a letter signed by Bhupinder Pal Singh, under-secretary to the central govt on March 1. Raturi succeeded SS Sandhu to become the 18th chief secretary. Sandhu, who assumed the role in July 2021, retired on Jan 31 after being granted a six-month extension.
Raturi started her career as a journalist and in 1987, she cracked the UPSC civil services exam and underwent training as an IPS officer in Hyderabad. The following year, she reappeared in the exam and was successful in becoming an IAS officer. After her training in Mussoorie, she started her career as an IAS officer in Madhya Pradesh. Her husband Anil Raturi - who retired as DGP of Uttarakhand - was an IPS officer, who she met during their training period at Hyderabad. Later her cadre was changed to Uttar Pradesh. After Uttarakhand was carved out of UP in 2000, the couple moved to the Himalayan state.
Throughout her career, Raturi has held various positions, including chief electoral officer of Uttarakhand. Before her appointment as the chief secretary, she served as the additional chief secretary to the chief minister.
