Caught taking bribe, patwari swallows notes of Rs 500 in Dehradun

DEHRADUN: A patwari posted in Kalsi area of Dehradun swallowed four currency notes of Rs 500 denomination after he was allegedly caught red-handed by the state vigilance department while accepting a bribe from a local resident on Monday.

According to vigilance department officials, a person had alleged that patwari Ghulam Haider demanded a bribe of Rs 2,000 for issuing domicile certificates to two of his relatives.

An officer of the state vigilance department said, "Acting on the complaint, a trap was laid to nab him. As per the pre-planned action, the relative of the complainant went to the Kalsi tehsil office on Monday with the bribe money, which Haider accepted. Within a few minutes, vigilance deptment officials nabbed him, but Haider swallowed the money in an attempt to destroy evidence."

Director state vigilance department, V Murugesan, said, "Haider was arrested."
