British-era India-Nepal bridge across Kali closed for repair

PITHORAGARH: A suspension bridge connecting India and Nepal across the Kali river at Jhulaghat in Pithoragarh district has been partially closed for essential repair work. The bridge, which suffered damage during last year's monsoon season, will undergo continuous repair for a duration of one month.

This historic suspension bridge, boasting a 100-metre span, dates back to the British era, when it was constructed in 1877. It served as a vital link between Kuomun in India and western Nepal. Sanjay Verma, assistant engineer at the Public Works Department (PWD), said, "The wooden plates and iron railing of the bridge were damaged. The District Magistrate allocated Rs 8 lakh for the repair work."

"Normally, the bridge operates from 6 am to 7 pm daily. However, during the repair period, it will be closed from 8.30 am to 1 pm and from 2 pm to 4 pm. The repair work is expected to last for a month," Verma added.

"Hundreds of people use the bridge with people from Nepal to Jhulaghat for their daily purchases. Retired servicemen also travel to collect their pensions. The closure of this bridge has affected them and other commuters. Traders have appealed to the DM to adjust the closure timings to provide some relief to the affected individuals," local resident Surendra Kumar said.
