The latest arrests include Aadesh Giri (50) from Shamli, Sameer Chaudhary (21) from Haridwar and Mohit Arora (28) from Delhi. Police said Sameer was among the occupants of the black Scorpio-N from which the fatal shots were fired, while Aadesh and Mohit were in the Fortuner and were later assaulted by the Scorpio occupants.
Police said raids are on to nab three remaining accused who are on the run, including Shantanu Tyagi of Saharanpur, Kavish Tyagi of Muzaffarnagar and Vaibhav.
The case pertains to a firing incident on March 30 morning near Johri village in Rajpur area. Two vehicles -- a Scorpio-N and a Delhi-registered Fortuner -- were involved in a high-speed chase during which occupants of both vehicles exchanged fire. A stray bullet struck Joshi, a resident of Johri area who was out on a morning walk. He was rushed to hospital but succumbed to his injuries later.
Based on a complaint filed by Joshi's relative, a case under relevant provisions of BNS and the Arms Act was registered at Rajpur police station.
Investigation revealed that the incident stemmed from a dispute the previous night at a bar in Kuthal Gate area. Police said the occupants of the Fortuner were employees of the bar and had an altercation with a group of youths travelling in the Scorpio over a billing issue. The confrontation escalated the following morning when the two groups encountered each other again, leading to the chase and exchange of fire.
Earlier, police had arrested four accused, including bar employees and the bar owner, and recovered two country-made pistols and live cartridges used in the crime. During interrogation, names of other accused had surfaced.
