Blueberry farming makes its debut in Dehradun

Dehradun: Blueberry farming has been introduced in Dehradun district for the first time under a pilot project, amid growing demand for antioxidant-rich fruits. Ten farmers have been selected for the initiative and will receive 500 blueberry plants at an 80% subsidy for cultivation on 500 square metres of land, officials said on Tuesday.With support from the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, polyhouses will be set up in selected villages of the Sahaspur block, which the horticulture department has identified as suitable for blueberry cultivation.District magistrate Ashish Chauhan said farmers would receive specialised training in scientific cultivation, plant maintenance, irrigation management and production techniques. “The administration will also work towards securing better market access for the farmers’ produce, ensuring they receive a fair price,” he said.Chief horticulture officer D K Tiwari said blueberry is a high-value crop that fetches between Rs 1,000 and Rs 1,500 per kg in the market. “Growing health awareness has led to a steady rise in demand for antioxidant-rich fruits, strengthening the commercial prospects of blueberry cultivation. This is an opportunity we want to explore. Blueberry plants typically begin bearing fruit within two years,” he said.Officials said that if the pilot succeeds, it will be expanded at the cluster level, potentially helping Dehradun emerge as a hub for blueberry production. They added that such initiatives could encourage farmers to diversify beyond traditional crops and adopt more profitable farming practices.
