Bereaved Uttarkashi couple donates body of 6-day-old son for medical education

Dehradun: A grieving couple from Uttarkashi's Adni village has turned their tragedy into a beacon of hope for medical education. Manoj Lal, a driver by profession, and his wife Vineeta welcomed their baby boy on Jan 6. However, the newborn faced severe breathing issues and was diagnosed with pharyngeal atresia and a tracheal-pharyngeal fistula — a congenital condition that causes an abnormal connection between the windpipe and the food pipe.
The child was admitted to AIIMS Rishikesh the following day and underwent successful surgery. However, on Jan 11, he succumbed to a cardiac ailment. Amid their grief, the couple sought advice on the final rites from Anil Kakkar of the Muktidham Samiti. They were told that traditionally, young children are either buried or immersed in the Ganga, as cremation is uncommon. However, the couple opted for an alternative path: they decided to donate their son's body to a private medical college in Dehradun for educational purposes.
"We were inspired by stories of organ donation. If our son's body can contribute to medical education, perhaps it will help students learn and save other newborns in the future," said Manoj.
Their decision was facilitated by Gopal Narang, the president of Lions Club Rishikesh, and Sanchit Arora, Uttarakhand project leader of the Mohan Foundation. Together, they ensured the necessary paperwork was completed, enabling the donation of the newborn's body to advance medical learning.
A similar decision was taken by a Haridwar couple in Dec, who donated the body of their 2.5-day-old daughter to Govt Doon Medical College, making her the "youngest" body donor in India.
The infant, born on Dec 8, had suffered from hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy and severe breathing difficulties before passing away. Her parents, Ram Mehar Kashyap and Nancy, made the decision to honour their daughter's short life by aiding medical education, with support from the Dadhichi Dehdaan Samiti.
