DEHRADUN: Uttarakhand chief minister (CM)
Pushkar Singh Dhami on Monday announced that 13 areas and two roads in four districts of the state would be renamed. Eight of these areas are in Haridwar, four in Dehradun, two in Nainital and one in Udham Singh Nagar district.
The chief minister said that the "renaming of these places is being done to align with the public sentiment and Indian culture and heritage, so that people can draw inspiration from the great personalities who have contributed to the preservation of Indian culture."
As per the proposal, Haridwar district's Auranzegpur in Bhagwanpur block would be renamed Shivaji Nagar, while Gaajiwali and Chandpur in Bahadrabad block would be changed to Arya Nagar and Jyotiba Phule Nagar respectively.
The proposed new names for two villages of the district's Narsan block, Mohammadpur Jat and Khanpur Kursli, are Mohanpur Jat and Ambedkar Nagar respectively. Idrispur and Khanpur areas of Khanpur block would be renamed as Nandpur and Shri Krishnpur respectively. While, Akbarpur Faazalpur in Roorkee block may soon be known as Vijaynagar.
In Dehradun district, Miyanwala under Dehradun Nagar Nigam would be called Ramji wala, Peerwala and Chandpur Khurd - both in Vikasnagar block - would become Kesari Nagar and Prithviraj Nagar respectively.
Abdullapur area in Sahaspur block would be renamed Daksnagar.
The Nawabi Road in Nainital would be known as Atal Marg and the Panchakki-ITI Road would get the name Guru Govalkar Marg.
The Sultanpatti nagar panchayat in Udham Singh Nagar district would get the new name Kaushalyapuri. Sources said that after the chief minister's announcement, the process for renaming these locations would commence soon.
The four districts of Dehradun, Udham Singh Nagar, Nainital and Haridwar are often referred to as plains in the Himalayan state having a mixed population.
