Artist with disability wins PM praise for pine bark artwork
Haldwani: In the 122nd episode of Mann Ki Baat on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded 65-year-old artist Jeevan Chandra Joshi from Haldwani's Kathghariya area, Uttarakhand, celebrating his resilience and creativity. Afflicted with polio, Joshi has carved out a unique artistic path — turning the dry bark of pine trees, locally known as baguette, into striking works of art.Praising Joshi's spirit, the PM said, "His life is a shining example of courage, self-reliance, and creativity." Joshi's work has not only earned widespread appreciation across India but has also found acclaim on international platforms. Polio affected Joshi's legs when he was a child, slowing his physical movement, but not his creative spirit. In recognition of his craft, Joshi became the first Indian artist to receive a fellowship from the ministry of culture for work on pine bark. Calling his work more than just art, PM Narendra Modi said, "The very bark, which people generally consider useless, becomes a heritage as soon as it comes into Jeevan ji's hands." Joshi's creations, he said, capture the folk instruments, traditions and essence of Uttarakhand. Modi further said, "Artists like Jeevan Joshi remind us that no matter what the circumstances are, if the intention is strong, nothing is impossible. His name is Jeevan and he has really shown what it means to live life." Following the PM's remarks, Nainital MP and former Union minister Ajay Bhatt visited Joshi's art centre to congratulate him. Bhatt assured him of govt support and prompt redressal of any issues.(Inputs from agencies)
