HARIDWAR: Vivek Kumar, the owner of "Genius Coaching Centre" in Roorkee, has been arrested for allegedly distributing leaked question papers for the AE/JE exams and helping students solve these for Rs 19 lakh each.
The AE/JE exam paper leak scam came to light earlier this month. Before this, UKPSC section officer Sanjeev Kumar, was arrested in the case, along with eight others. BJP leader Sanjay Dhariwal, one of the accused, is on the run.
Interestingly, when 66 of the 250 candidates who qualified for the UPCL JE 2018 exam turned out to be from Kumar's institute, the then DM of Haridwar, Deepak Rawat, conducted an enquiry and found several irregularities in that exam. The exam was then cancelled but Kumar escaped action. Haridwar SSP Ajay Singh told TOI, "We found Vivek Kumar had convinced his students to buy the leaked papers of AE/JE exams and helped them solve those too. He had a deep connection with the cheating mafia. Our investigation is underway and more arrests will be made."
Deepak Rawat, who is now the commissioner of Kumaon, told TOI, "UKSSSC had asked us to conduct an inquiry into how 66 students of the same coaching centre were selected. The investigation revealed several irregularities, including the fact that all applicants from Genius coaching centre gave the same wrong answer for a question. I submitted my report to the UKSSSC and the exam was cancelled."
