NAINITAL: Director general of police

Anil Raturi

said on Friday that 750 sub-inspectors from state police will be trained to tackle cybercrime. “The state police department will train selected officers to combat rising menace of cybercrime. A total of 750 sub-inspectors will learn how to deal with cybercrime,’ said the DGP while on a visit to

Nainital

.

The move aims to train police to solve online and bank frauds, crime through social networking websites and mobile applications efficiently and swiftly. At present,

Uttarakhand

has dedicated cyber crime police stations in state, including one in

Dehradun

.

The DGP said that besides cybercrime, drug menace was a challenge for the force. “Cybercrime and drug menace will be dealt with strictly so that people are not harmed,” the top cop said.

Raturi also praised the Nainital district police for curbing crime in the district.

Raturi added that investigating officers in drug cases need more knowledge of contraband and related laws to present cases strongly in court. He added that officers need to be better trained in collection of forensic evidence.

Last month, the Uttarakhand high court while hearing the matter of custodial death of

Kashipur

teenager Ziyauddin Raza had asked the state government whether the investigation officers in the case were “scientifically trained to handle such cases which involved dealing with sensitive forensic evidence”. The teen had died in mysterious circumstances while in police custody in February this year.

In response to the court’s query, the investigation officer in the case replied that he had “never had any training of this nature”. The court had subsequently pulled up the state government for not training police officers properly before letting them handle sensitive cases.

Meanwhile, the DGP also asked the state police personnel to keep fit. “Fitness of police personnel is imperative given the nature of the job. Police force personnel should take care of their fitness and treat it as a priority,” added the DGP.
