ALMORA: To make

streets of Almora safer

, 39 CCTV cameras have been installed at various public places in the town. The cameras have been

installed at bus stands

, taxi stands,

major crossroads and hospitals

in the district headquarters.

The cameras have been installed at a

cost of Rs 35 lakh

which has been covered under MLA funds. A control room has also been set up at the office of police superintendent in Almora.

Senior superintendent of police Kunwar Singh told TOI that the cameras would provide round the clock surveillance to all major areas in the town. “This will aid us in investigations and also act as a deterrent to crime.”

In 2015, the district administration decided to install 100 CCTV cameras in inter-colleges to

track attendance of teachers and principals

. The CCTV cameras were to be installed in principals' rooms where usually attendance registers are kept, so that footage of teachers signing the register is captured. The move ahd received mixed reactions from teachers but most parents had hailed it as a welcome move. The plan, however, did not materialise for unknown reasons.
