MUSSOORIE: It made an early appearance in October this year but the sudden chill and unusual haze soon took away the joy of perfect sunsets with the magical winterline from residents and visitors. However, with the winter chill setting in, the glorious skyline has made a comeback in the Mussoorie sky.
A meteorological wonder visible in Burn in Switzerland and Mussoorie in Uttarakhand, winterline is an imaginary horizon that appears usually in the middle of October and lasts till January, making the evening sky a riot of colours. Picture perfect for tourists, this one ensures every picture gives a postcard finish.
In fact, the hill town also has a winter carnival by the name of ‘Winterline Carnival’ from December 25-30 to celebrate the phenomena. The festival will enter its fifth edition this year and will have eating joints and hotels.
Thankfully the haze that had settled in the past few days is clear and one can expect to see the glorious sunsets again. Vikram Singh, director IMD of Dehradun, said, “Sudden winds are common around this time of the year and the northwesterly winds saw some disturbance which resulted in a bit of haze. However, things look normal now and one can see clear sunsets again.”
Tourists who are particularly excited about seeing the winterline and shooting pictures with the perfect backdrop seem happy at the news. Like Arti Singha, a tourist from Gujarat who was in the hill town says “I had read about the Winterline on the internet and was disappointed to not having being able to see it. I hope I see it in the next two days I still have here,” she said.
