HC suspends life sentence of ex-MLA Reddy, 2 others

Cuttack: Orissa high court has suspended the life sentence of former Chhatrapur MLA Nagireddy Narayan Reddy for his involvement in the death of a police inspector during an agitation in 1998. The sentence was suspended pending disposal of the criminal appeal filed by the former CPI leader. The court of additional district judge (ADJ-3)-cum-special judge for MPs & MLAs had sentenced Reddy and 12 others to life imprisonment on July 31, 2023 for the death of inspector Binoba Meher in a blast during an agitation against land acquisition for a steel plant in Ganjam district.Reddy and two others had filed a criminal appeal challenging their conviction and seeking suspension of life sentence.While passing the interim order on Monday, the two judge bench of Justice Debabrata Dash and Justice V Narasingh directed that further execution of the sentence imposed upon the appellants (Reddy and two others) by the trial court “shall remain suspended pending disposal of the appeal”.The bench also directed the release of Reddy and other two appellants on bail on such terms and conditions as deemed proper by the trial court.While directing the listing of the appeal on November 5, the bench granted interim relief after “taking into account the submissions, the impugned judgment and the happening in the incident, including the role of the appellants as those emanate from the evidence and also the surrounding circumstances.”In February 1996, the state govt had started acquisition of nearly 7,000 acres of land in Sindhigaon, Badapaur, Patrapur, Kalipalli and Paikapada villages for a proposed steel plant.In June 1998, reserve inspector Meher was deputed to Sindhigaon village to keep an eye on possible law and order situation during a protest against land acquisition. On June 18, 1998, someone hurled a bomb towards Meher which ripped apart his stomach. He died on his way to the hospital. Twenty-two people, including Reddy, were listed as accused and all of them were charged with murder.

Woman sentenced two months jail for overfeeding pet dog Nuggi to death

A woman in New Zealand was sentenced to two months in jail for causing the death of her dog through overfeeding. The dog, Nuggi, weighed 53.7kg and suffered from multiple health issues due to his excessive weight. Despite being rescued by the SPCA, Nuggi's condition worsened, leading to his death.
