HC asks govt to consider Musa river footbridge

Cuttack: The Orissa high court on Monday directed the state govt to explore the option of a foot overbridge at Garuda Square as an alternative for pedestrians to cross the Musa river after closure of the 13th century Atharnala bridge at the entry point of Puri town. The HC was hearing a PIL seeking intervention against closure of the heritage bridge.Kelu Charan Paikray, a resident of the locality, filed the petition. Pedestrians have been left without any means to cross the river after the bridge, a protected monument, was closed for traffic, the petition said. In a counter affidavit, the state govt had stated that a road had been constructed as a diversion parallel to the bridge and the old bridge was left for use by the pedestrians. Paikray, who appeared in person, said the ASI had stopped even movement of pedestrians on the bridge. The diversion road then should have a footpath forr pedestrians, he urged. Taking note of it, the two-judge bench of Chief Justice Chakradhari Sharan Singh and Justice M S Raman said: “In the counter affidavit which was filed on behalf of the state govt, it has been stated that in future if there is any plan to have a bridge over Musa river, provision shall be made for footpath.”
