Ensure potable water in Cuttack’s festive season: HC

Cuttack: The Orissa high court has called for uninterrupted and adequate supply of safe drinking water in Cuttack to ward off water-borne diseases during the upcoming festive season in the city that will start with Ganesh Puja on September 7 and continue till Baliyatra in the third week of November.The two-judge bench of Justice S K Sahoo and Justice Chittaranjan Dash said, “During this festive season, people from different parts of the country are likely to visit the millennium city of Cuttack and uninterrupted supply of hygienic water is required for strengthening the supply system to residences and in the taps available in public places.”The court issued the direction on Wednesday while hearing a PIL seeking intervention for supply of safe drinking water supply in Cuttack city. Maitree Sansad, a city-based voluntary organisation, filed the petition in 2016 and advocate Ajay Mohanty represented it.The bench further directed, “Let the health officer, the deputy commissioner (sanitation) of Cuttack municipal corporation (CMC), the Water Corporation of Odisha (WATCO) officials, more particularly, the general manager, WATCO (Cuttack division) sit together and chalk out a plan in that regard and shall submit the minutes of the meeting before the court on the next date (September 4).”“Safe drinking water is a priority and access to it is a basic right. Maintaining clean water supplies to people assumes much importance to control water-borne diseases which have the potential to become an outbreak. When Cuttack city is flanked by Mahanadi river on the north and Kathajodi on the south, the district administration should ensure uninterrupted supply of clean water to the people,” the bench added while directing the manager of WATCO (Cuttack division) and the health officer of CMC to appear before the court through virtual mode at 10:30am on September 4.In an affidavit, WATCO had stated that at present, water supply to 70% area is being treated through the water treatment plants and for the rest of the 30% area, steps are being taken for erecting and commissioning of a treatment plant.

Power and drinking water supply to be disrupted in parts of Trichy

Power supply will be cut off in some parts of Trichy on Thursday, August 29, for maintenance at the Srirangam 110/11KV substation. The affected areas will experience a power shutdown from 9.45 am to 4 pm, resulting in a drinking water supply disruption, which will resume Saturday, August 31.

KWA to regulate water supply at Maradu

Ongoing water shortages in Maradu municipality and Valanthakadu Island have prompted the Kerala Water Authority to regulate valve operations. The northern area of NH 85 will receive water on Tuesdays, while the southern area will be supplied on Thursdays. This measure will continue for several weeks to stabilize the water supply.

Focus on supply of potable water, nodal secretary tells Mysuru officials

Mysuru officials have been instructed to ensure the supply of potable water and monitor its quality. The district is digitising land records and addressing crop and property losses from heavy rains. Departments are taking steps to aid affected residents and prevent disease outbreaks during the rainy season.
