HC admits plea against Rajnagar MLA’s election

Cuttack: The Orissa high court has admitted a petition challenging the election of BJD MLA Dhruba Charan Sahoo from Rajnagar. Lalit Kumar Behera of BJP, who lost to Sahoo by 1,817 votes filed the election petition.After a preliminary hearing on Friday, the single judge bench of Justice Ananda Chandra Behera issued notice to BJD MLA and seven other candidates who contested in the election to file a written statement and fixed Aug 30 as the day for the settlement of issues. Sahoo was re-elected from Ragnagar seat, an assembly segment of Kendrapada Lok Sabha constituency, in the recent general elections.The petition sought quashing of Sahoo’s election on the ground of improper acceptance of his nomination papers by the returning officer inspite of non-compliance with statutory provisions.

Elections to 12 vacant Rajya Sabha seats on September 3: Election Commission

The Election Commission announced that elections for 12 vacant Rajya Sabha seats in nine states would be held on September 3. The last date for nominations withdrawal is August 26-27. The vacancies have arisen due to 10 members, including Union Ministers, being elected to the Lok Sabha, and two resignations. States include Assam, Bihar, Maharashtra among others.

AAP to contest all 36 Mumbai seats in upcoming Maharashtra elections

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) announced that it would contest all 36 seats in Mumbai in the upcoming Maharashtra assembly elections. Party spokesperson Preeti Menon confirmed their participation and criticized the Eknath Shinde government, accusing it of prioritizing Ahmedabad's prosperity over Maharashtra. AAP remains part of the INDIA bloc but will contest state elections independently.

Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah submits more papers to governor; new petition filed

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah provided more documents to Governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot's office, arguing that allegations against him in the Mysuru Urban Development Authority case do not merit prosecution. A new petition filed by an activist claims Siddaramaiah recommended land denotification without proper verification. Siddaramaiah stated his readiness for a legal and political battle if prosecution is sanctioned.
