Medical officer gets 2-year jail for taking bribe

Cuttack: The court of special judge (vigilance) Cuttack on Tuesday sentenced medical officer Dr Karunakar Rout to two years of rigorous imprisonment following conviction for taking a bribe in 2014.
The Cuttack unit of state vigilance had registered a case against Dr Rout under the Prevention of Corruption Act for taking bribe while he was medical officer of the community health centre at Madhuban in Jajpur district in 2014. He was caught red-handed while demanding and accepting bribe from a contractual health worker for not acting against him for remaining absent from duty during supervision.
The court imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on Dr Rout, who is presently medical officer at the district headquarters hospital in Bhadrak, a press release from state vigilance said.
Special public prosecutor Sarbeswar Barik and assistant public prosecutor Deepak Kumar Swain argued the case on behalf of the prosecution. State vigilance will now move the competent authority for dismissal of Dr Rout from service following his conviction.
