Lucknow jeweller accused of killing family gets bail

Cuttack: Lucknow-based jeweller Amit Agarwal, who was arrested by CBI from Indore five years after he allegedly killed his wife and two children in a seaside hotel in Puri in 2013 was granted bail by the Orissa high court on Tuesday.The single judge bench of Justice Sangam Kumar Sahoo ordered for his release after finding that only 12 out of the 152 prosecution witnesses had been examined since the charges were framed against him on December 26, 2018. The bodies of Amit’s wife Ankita Bansal, their daughters – Vaani and Divyansh — were found in the hotel room on December 15, 2013. But Amit was absconding. Though Puri police initially probed the case, the CBI took up the case following a directive from the Orissa high court and instituted a case on September 3, 2015.Officials of CBI’s Kolkata wing traced Amit to Indore and took him into custody on May 25, 2018 and submitted a chargesheet in the trial court in Bhubaneswar on September 20, 2018. Amit was named as the main accused.Amit filed the bail petition in the high court after the court of second additional sessions judge (Bhubaneswar) rejected his bail on July 6, 2023.Justice Sahoo directed for release of Amit on bail considering that the reason for the slow progress of trial is not attributable to the petitioner in any manner and since there is nothing adverse against his conduct neither during the interim bail period granted by the high court nor in the period of his detention in judicial custody.“He shall furnish bail bond of Rs one lakh with two local solvent sureties each for the like amount to the satisfaction of the trial court with further terms and conditions as the court may deem just and proper,” Justice Sahoo ordered, while setting several other conditions, including the personal appearance before the SP, CBI, Bhubaneswar once a month preferably during the first week. Investigations by CBI had revealed that Amit and his family had left their Lucknow house on August 17, 2013. They checked into the hotel in Puri on December 9, 2013. UP police had on August 20, 2013 found his car abandoned near Allahabad and found a suicide note in which he allegedly stated that he was going to die by suicide with his family members.
