‘ASI needs design nod from SJTA to begin Natamandap repair’

Cuttack: The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) will take up the work to strengthen the cracked beam in the Natamandap (dancing hall) of Puri Jagannath Temple after the final design of the stainless steel box beam is approved by the shrine administration, amicus curiae N K Mohanty informed the Orissa high court on Monday.Mohanty’s report said the ASI is waiting for the expert committee of Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) to fix a date for a meeting to approve the design. Without the approval, the ASI’s technical expert committee is not able to hold further meetings on the issue.On a query, the SJTA’s chief administrator had assured to hold the meeting between Tuesday and Thursday, Mohanty submitted. He further stated the ASI had already dismantled the framed decorative wooden ceiling of the central pillar head and stored it in the museum on the temple complex. De-plastering of the stone structures supporting the pillar heads on the four directions has been completed with appropriate joint sealing of the de-plastered area, he added. Taking on record the amicus curiae’s report, the two-judge bench of acting Chief Justice B R Sarangi and Justice M S Raman posted the matter to January 18.The HC is monitoring repair and renovation work inside the Natamandap as part of adjudication on the PIL for conservation of the 12th century shrine filed in 2016.

After 7 extensions, ASI submits survey report on Gyanvapi

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) submitted its report on the scientific survey of the Gyanvapi mosque complex in Varanasi. The report was filed in two sealed envelopes before the district judge. One envelope contained the report, while the other had a list of articles found in debris at the mosque compound. The defendants requested that the report be filed in a sealed envelope for confidentiality. The plaintiffs demanded a copy of the ASI report and the court will address this demand on December 21.
