HC gives 1-mnth to disburse pension to 91-yr-old widow

Cuttack: The Orissa high court has given Kendrapada district collector Suryawanshi Mayur Vikas one month’s time to make arrangements for disbursal of family pension to a 91-year-old woman whose husband, a school teacher, had died 46 years back.The direction comes four months after the high court had asked the Kendrapada district collector “to take consequential action for sanction of family pension in favour of Hara Sahoo, whose husband expired on August 26, 1977, as due and admissible from the date of entitlement and release the same along with arrears within a period of two months from the date of receipt of order”. But months after the November 15, 2023 directive, the elderly woman is yet to get family pension, forcing her to file a contempt petition through advocate Ganeswar Behera. While disposing of the petition, the single judge bench of Justice Biraja Prasanna Satapathy said on Friday, “This contempt petition is disposed of by granting one-month further time to the contemnor to comply with the order passed on November 15, 2023.” But Justice Satapathy cautioned, “If the order is not complied with within the extended time, it will be held as deliberate violation of this court’s order.”Sahoo stays with her son, a 60-year-old retired fisheries department employee, daughter-in-law, three grandsons and two granddaughters at Palei Derakundi in Kendrapada district. As per case records, the widow had filed several representations for family pension before the school and mass education authorities in Kendrapada district since 1991, but in vain.
