Family of brain dead man donate his kidneys
Cuttack: Family members of a 58-year-old brain dead patient donated his kidneys at SCB Medical College and Hospital here on Monday.
Virendra Prasad Swain, a bank employee of Raghunathpur village in Jagatsinghpur district, was admitted to the ICU on Sunday after an accident. Doctors declared him brain dead on Monday.

Dr Aruna Acharya, head of department, nephrology, told TOI that his family members were aware of organ donation and readily agreed to the proposal after Virendra was declared brain dead.

“After his family members gave consent, the procedure was started. We checked the waiting list of registered patients for kidney transplantion and two persons were selected as per state norms,” he said.
Virendra’s son Subhasish Swain, a software engineer, said, “Losing him was painful but whatever has happened cannot be undone. His kidneys will help two other persons.”
According to state govt norms, a guard of honour was given to Virendra during his last rites on Tuesday.
