CUTTACK: The entrance to Cuttack railway station could look like the historic Barabati fort as the railway ministry plans for a massive renovation of the station, which was connected to the rail network in 1899. The proposed design of the entrance gate and building will reflect the aesthetics of Cuttack's rich cultural heritage.

Earlier, Union railways minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had uploaded the design of Cuttack railway station on social media and had asked for public opinion.

The design was finalised by the minister following massive response from the public. The upcoming structure will conserve the existing heritage of the millennium city. Architectural elevation and facade will attempt to capture the spirit of Cuttack Barabati fort.

The station will be a three-storied building with modern amenities. The renovation will see a 108-metre-wide concourse, dedicated parking lot two and four-wheelers, food plaza and advanced security system with integrated CCTV across the station.

The upgraded station will be a green building, with energy-efficient LED lighting, sewage treatment plant and energy conservation systems. There will be seamless multi-modal integration with local public transport along with well-demarcated pick-up and drop zones.

The architectural design has given importance to natural lighting and green environment across the station while planting more number of trees. It will have provisions for differently-abled, including access ramps, escalator and best facilities including lift, foot over-bridge and best-model platforms for the passengers.
