COIMBATORE: The Saravanampatti police in the city have begun efforts to nab some youths who stabbed and assaulted two men in public. The youths assaulted the duo for questioning them for bursting firecrackers in public.
The incident happened around 9.30pm on Tuesday. In his police complaint, K Karunakaran, 27, of Murugan Nagar in Vinayagapuram stated that a group of youths residing in the area was celebrating a birthday on the road near his house. They burst firecrackers in public, which disturbed the residents.
The residents questioned the youths. The group abused the residents and continued to set off firecrackers on the road. Karunakaran confronted the youths and questioned their actions. Enraged, they abused him using a foul language and stabbed him with a knife. Bakiyaraj, 45, a neighbour of Karunakaran, intervened to stop them. However, they stabbed him too and escaped from the scene.
The injured were rushed to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. The police registered a case. The youths were absconding, the police said.
