COIMBATORE: The district cybercrime police have arrested a 24-year-old woman for uploading obscene videos of her cousin, who is a final year MBBS student, on social media.
An investigation officer identified the accused as Kausalya, of Periyanayakkanpalayam. An employee with an IT firm in Chennai, she has been working from home for a while.
He said Kausalya was having a grudge against her cousin, as she had told her parents about her love affair. “Kausalya has been waiting to take revenge on her cousin. When she learnt about the cousin’s love affair, she got in touch with her lover Balakrishnan, 24, through a fake Instagram account. Kausalya posed as an ex-lover of her cousin and gained the trust of Balakrishnan, an IT employee from Thondamuthur.”
According to the officer, Kausalya told Balakrishnan that she had intimate videos of his lover and assured that she would share them with him.
“Meanwhile, Balakrishnan shared the videos of her cousin in his possession to Kausalya based on her request. She posted them on an Instagram page, which Balakrishnan created for this specific purpose.”
When Kausalya’s cousin came to know about the videos through her friends, she lodged a complaint with the district cybercrime police. “We zeroed in on Kausalya using her IP address last week,” the officer said.
Police subsequently nabbed Kausalya and Balakrishnan on February 16 and booked them under various sections of the Information Technology Act and the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act.
“Balakrishnan was booked for sharing the obscene videos of Kausalya’s cousin to her. The two were produced before a judicial magistrate and lodged in Coimbatore Central Prison under judicial custody,” the officer said.
