Vice-President appeals to Tirupur exporters not to lose hope as talks are going on between India and US
TIRUPUR: Vice-President C P Radhakrishnan on Wednesday appealed to exporters not to lose hope as negotiations between India and the United States are continuing.
The Vice-President was speaking at a felicitation event organised by the People’s Forum of Tirupur. On the challenges faced by Tirupur’s textile industry following the increase in US tariffs, Radhakrishnan said, “I have met Union minister for commerce and industry Piyush Goyal three times. He has expressed confidence that negotiations between both countries are progressing and that exchanges of views are ongoing. Though the situation is challenging, talks are continuing. Therefore, no one should lose hope. In the future, there will come a day when exports to the United States will double compared to the current level,” he said.
Radhakrishnan said in politics, while leaders often criticise their opponents, it is equally important to learn from their good qualities. “DMK leader Karunanidhi experienced both grand victories and defeats in Tamil Nadu, yet he never stopped working. Even in defeat, he would write in Murasoli with the same conviction, encouraging cadres to rise and protect the Tamil community,” he said.
Radhakrishnan recalled feeling deep regret when he defeated CPI leader R Nallakannu in the (1999) Lok Sabha elections , describing him as a person who lived and demonstrated that politics should serve the welfare of others, not self-interest.
He praised the leadership qualities of former chief minister J Jayalalithaa and former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi listens to everyone, extracts the good, and acts upon it,” he added.
