Two friends fall into water-filled pit in Coimbatore and escape; but each thinks the other drowned

friends

, who were travelling on a motorcycle, fell into a water-filled

pit

on the Somanur Road in Coimbatore on Monday night. Though both of them survived the fall, each thought his friend had drowned.

Devakumar and his friend Tamilselvan, who were from Thukkanaickenpalayam in Erode district, are working in a private firm near Karumathampatti in Coimbatore district. The duo was staying in a rental room on the Annur Road.

On Monday night, the duo went to Somanur. The accident happened when they were returning to their room. Due to heavy rain, Devakumar, who was riding the two-wheeler, didn’t see the water-filled pit on the road. The 10-foot-deep was dug up to construct a flyover.

The duo and the motorcycle fell into the pit.

On Tuesday morning, some passersby found Devakumar in the pit. He was holding on to a cable. He thought Tamilselvan drowned. He was rescued and sent Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH).

The public began to search for Tamilselvan. They were not able to find anyone in the pit. They retrieved the motorcycle and a helmet.

The public informed the Karumathampatti police and the fire and rescue services department who reached the spot.

Meanwhile, Tamilselvan, who came to the spot from a nearby shop, told the police that he managed to come out of the pit in the early hours of Tuesday. He told the police that his friend, Devakumar, had drowned and requested them to conduct a search. Police told him that Devakumar had been rescued and sent to CMCH . Later, Tamilselvan was also sent to CMCH.

Police said blood samples would be taken from the duo to check if they were under the influence of alcohol.
