COIMBATORE: The Podanur police on Thursday booked two people for cheating a city resident of 22 lakh by promising to provide a loan of 3 crore.
An investigation officer said they registered a case against Nagore Meeran, of Tenkasi, and another person named John under sections 420 (cheating) and 406 (criminal breach of trust) of the Indian Penal Code based on a complaint lodged by H Soukath, 54, of Saratha Mill Road at Podanur.
“Soukath approached Meeran in January, seeking a loan of 3 crore to expand his business by pledging his house documents as surety. Meeran introduced John to Soukath as a lawyer and took 1.2 lakh from him as document verification charges. Later, he made Soukath pay him 21 lakh in two installments as his commission. After that Meeran stopped responding to Soukath’s phone calls,” the officer said. “We have launched a probe into the case.”
