Salem: A 54-year-old TNSTC bus conductor died in the city on Tuesday morning after he fell off a city town bus while travelling on the footboard. The conductor lost his balance when the driver applied sudden brakes to avoid hitting a stray dog that was crossing the road.
The deceased, A Rajendran, 54, was attached to the Salem division of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation. He was on duty in a city town bus that was plying between Chettichavadi and the old bus stand on Tuesday.
Driver Srinivasan, 43, started the bus from Chettichavadi around 8.45am, a police officer said.
“When the bus neared the Pasavakkal bus stop, a stray dog suddenly crossed the road close to the bus. The driver applied the brakes. Rajendran standing on the footboard lost his balance and fell on the road,” the officer said.
A passerby who witnessed the incident immediately called ‘108’ service. “As there was a slight delay in the arrival of the ambulance, driver Srinivasan took Rajendran to the government hospital in the bus.
However, doctors at the hospital declared that Rajendran was brought dead,” the officer added. The Kannankurichi police registered a case and initiated an inquiry.
